Hair Loss Medication : Finasteride (Propecia) 
Currently only Finasteride ( Propecia) is approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the USA and by the registration Authorities in many other countries for the oral treatment of androgenetic alopecia in men.
Finasteride blocks the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the form of the hormone that causes male pattern baldness.
Finasteride has shown to slow down hair loss and grow hair in a significant number of individuals. In clinical trials, moderate to dense regrowth was seen in 48% of individuals after one year (compared to 7% placebo) and in 66% of individuals after two years (compared to 7% placebo).
Now an estimated 1 million men in the United States take Finasteride daily. Most men taking Finasteride experience an increase in hair count, a decrease in hair loss, and an improvement in appearance.
It is important to have realistic expectations, as results take time. If you are not willing to commit yourself to taking Finasteride for at least twelve months, it's probably not worth starting. Secondly, Finasteride must be taken on an ongoing basis to maintain the benefit.
Men who are already very bald are less likely to benefit from Finasteride, because the hair follicles may not be salvageable. Men who have early thinning in the back and top have a better chance to see benefits.
Propecia ( Finasteride) Product
Finasteride ( Propecia) is indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men who have mild to moderate scalp hair loss of the vertex and anterior mid-scalp. Finasteride is not indicated in women and children.
The recommended dosage is one 1 mg tablet daily. Finasteride may be taken with or without food.
In general, daily use for 3 months or more is necessary before hair growth is increased and/or further hair loss is prevented. The clinical benefits of finasteride can only be maintained with continuous use of finasteride.
In a phase 3 study, 933 men aged 18 to 41 with mild to moderate androgenetic alopecia hair loss were randomised to receive either finasteride 1 mg/day or placebo for one year
.In 1% of men the hair loss progressed, in 51% the hair loss stabilised, and in 48% hair regrew (table). Hair regrowth was graded as slight in 30%, moderate in 16% and greatly increased in 2%.
A response to finasteride may be seen after 4 months, but patients should be encouraged to continue the treatment for at least 24 months before evaluating it. If successful, the treatment should be continued indefinitely as the balding process continues when treatmentis are stopped.
Pregnancy: Use in women when they are or may potentially be pregnant.
Caution should be used in the administration of finasteride in patients with liver function abnormalities, as finasteride is metabolized in the liver. Other causes of alopecia should be ruled out prior to prescribing finasteride. Efficacy and duration of treatment should be assessed periodically by the treating physician.
No drug interactions of clinical importance have been identified.
Finasteride for male pattern hair loss has been evaluated for safety in clinical studies involving more than 3200 men and is generally well tolerated. Side effects are moderate and may comprise
Finasteride has been shown to be a useful addition to surgical hair restoration for a number of reasons. Finasteride works best in the younger patient who may not yet be a candidate for hair transplantation.
Finasteride is less effective in the front part of the scalp, the area where surgical hair restoration can offer the greatest cosmetic improvement. Finasteride can regrow, or stabilize hair loss, in the crown where hair transplantation may not always be indicated.
